New Year’s eve is all about glitz and glam  and last-minute party planning is all about easy Pinterest success stories. Below a compilation of some of our most creative and simple ideas, complete with expert advice from our go-to event consultant: Kelly Michael. So kick back, relax, and enjoy the last two days of 2013 – after Tuesday night’s party, you’ll be ringing in the New Year with a revered reputation.
Photo booth
All the rage at weddings these days, a fun idea for your guests would be to provide a place where they can take “photo booth” pictures to ring in the new year. Simply get a few fun and silly props (hats, sunglasses, bow ties, moustaches, etc.) and a white board where they can write messages or their New Years resolution. The back drop can be as simple as a bed sheet, but a sparkly curtain works even better.
Countdown chinaware
Remember how at Christmas we suggested writing a sweet message for your loved one on a plain white mug and then baking it so the sentiment lasts forever? Well for New Year’s you can do something similar and draw Roman numerals on your dishes or serving trays to keep all eyes on the clock at your party. Remember: the design will last, so you have to be committed to having a set of countdown chinaware all year round.
Custom Wine glasses or champagne flutes
New Years is all about the bubbly. Spice up champagne flutes with a simple sharpie! Inspired by Pinterest, write saying like “pop” “fizz” and “clink” as well as numbers simulating the New Years countdown on plastic glasses with silver or gold pens. Meghan picked up a metallic gold sharpie pen from Michaels and simply drew on plastic wine glasses from party mart or the dollar store. You can be creative and write anything. New Years related. Or you can have guests write their resolutions on their glasses if you’d like!
Elderflower water: kid champagne
Catherine’s parents always knew how to make her feel part of the adult table at New Year’s by pouring her her own glass of “champagne”. Elderflower water can be found in most grocery stores and is usually packaged in the shape of a wine bottle. For all the youngsters at your party, let them feel extra grown up by giving them their own champagne flute to toast in the New Year with a yummy substitute.
Resolution pin board or punch bowl
Experts say that if you write your resolution down, you’re more likely to follow through with it, so why not incorporate a way for your guests to reflect on the year ahead. If doing a small, family gathering at home – especially with kids – a really nice idea is to get everyone to write their resolution down and then make a pin board with them that can be hung up somewhere in the home. For a larger gathering, why not get everyone to write their resolution down on a piece of paper and place them in a punch bowl. Draw one resolution and that person wins a door prize!
Party City: your New Year’s Eve saviour
We Ottawa nuts come from a little suburb called Orleans and are proud of it! Among the east end’s most notable destinations is Party City on Tenth Line and Innes. Our go-to party planner, Kelly, swears by it and puts on the most impressive spreads for every shaker she throws. By buying things like these individual salad containers, you make simple recipes look like hours and hours of slaving in the kitchen. What says Happy New Year like “I spent all day making you this hors d’oeuvre”? Nothing. That’s what.
Colour scheme: All gold and silver everythang
New Years is all about class and elegance, with a whole lot of glitz. The colour scheme that best represents NYE is silver and gold. Add some black in for a pop.
The ultimate party trick
Do not try this at home! … Or do … Youtube a video of how to pop a champagne cork off with a knife and you will be the life of the party. Warning: things could go terribly awry. Make sure you are confident in your skills before ruining everybody’s New Year’s by covering your guests in a champagne shower.
