October in Ottawa: Bucketlist

Get your flannel, blanket scarves, sweaters and boots ready: fall has arrived in Ottawa. We’re in the heavenly time that exists between scorching summer heat and frigid winter temps. Call us basic, but is it a crime to want to go apple picking and then enjoy amazing apple treats? Read on for a list of things we want to do this month in Ottawa…

1. Apple Picking

Apple season usually runs from late August through mid-October, so you’ve got like 2 weeks to get out and pick your own apples! Fresh apples are the BEST and really good for you. Places to pick in Ottawa: Cannamore Orchards near Cassleman, Pinewood Orchards in Kanata and Orleans Fruit Farm in Orleans. Check their websites for hours, varieties and additional activities.

2. Get One Last Hike In

We’re lucky to live in a place with access to great hiking trails so close by. Gatineau Park has so many options and now that the leaves are changing, the views are going to be spectacular. Make sure to take in the sights before a) all the leaves fall and b) it gets too cold! Also, Gatineau Park is hosting Fall Rhapsody from October 1-16.

3. Fall Football

We’re big fans of watching Ottawa Redblacks football when they play at home because the atmosphere is always electric! There are 3 regular season games scheduled for October 7, 21 and November 4. Pick up tickets here, bundle up and enjoy a night at TD Place!

4. Embrace Everything Pumpkin

This item on the list encompasses a few things that will help you embrace the fruit of the season (yes pumpkins are technically considered fruits, I googled it).

4(a): Get yourself a damn #PSL

I don’t care who you are, if you don’t enjoy at least one seasonal pumpkin spice latte from Starbucks, you’re missing out. New to the coffee game, I tried it for the first time this year and finally understand the hype. Bonus points if you photograph it and post it on social media. #noshame

4(b): Pick your own Pumpkins

Last year, I went with my family to Miller’s Farm and took a wagon ride out to the pumpkin patch where we got to pick our own pumpkins for carving/home decor. This was a great activity to do with my nephews and niece!

4(c): Pumpkinferno

I’ve been to Upper Canada Village’s Alight at Night event before, but I have yet to take in Pumpkinferno and this year I hope to change that! Close to 7,000 carved pumpkins are lit up and displayed throughout the 1860’s heritage village. Plus, there are treats to be enjoyed while you check out the displays. Get there before October 30th!

6. Something Spooky

My love for Halloween runs deep, but I haven’t been able to bring myself to a haunted house/village for a few years. Ottawa has some great options for fun-filled scares, so this year I promised myself I would check one out. Here’s some of the best places in Ottawa to get your fright-fill this October:

fright-fest

Saunder’s Farm: Haunting Season during the day & Fright Nights. Take in the haunted hayride, barn of terror and a new haunted carnival. (Until October 31, tickets $19-36/person)

Cannamore Orchards: Haunted wagon ride, house of terror, fog maze and fortune telling (if you dare). (Until October 30, tickets from $18-22/person)

Skreamers: This Orleans asylum has been operating in secret, under the most precarious situations. You’ll have to deal with the inmates as you make your way through their various haunts. (Until October 31, tickets $20/person)

Billings Estate National Historic Site: Haunted House on the Hill is, “set amongst the shadows of the night and will transport you on a trip to the darkest side of your immagination”. (October 14-29, tickets $10.20/person)
