Paint Night 1

Paint Nation!

Last week, I had the pleasure of spending an evening doing two of my favorite things; sipping cocktails and throwing paint at a canvas in an atmosphere where my less-than-stellar artistic tendencies were not being judged.

Peterborough-based company Spirits & Splatters is taking the GTA by storm, and it definitely has something to do with their stellar combo of drinks and art lessons. If you are looking for a fun activity or class to break out of your weekly routine, ‘The Art of Drinking Creatively’ with Spirits & Splatters is the perfect solution. I felt like I was an exciting female protagonist in a quirky episode of Friends, which for me was far more exciting than paying $100 to join a 6-week volleyball team and embarrass myself repeatedly.

Held at local Toronto restaurant & lounge, Insomnia, this edition of Spirits & Splatters was an intimate gathering of 6 + hummus and chips. Organizer Sara Ostrowska is a Philosophy & Fine Arts graduate who has found her niche in this cool and innovative traveling arts class. Spirits employs local struggling artists as teachers in each city they hold workshops, which adds to the laid-back, non-pretentious attitude of the whole experience (shout out to our teacher Michele – thank you for lying to me and saying my painting looked good). Simply put: this is an art class for low key fun-lovers and non-artists who like to drink.

Bonus: Spirits & Splatters are self-described “all-Canadian” – using paint made in Kingston and employing artists in each city they hit, they aim to raise awareness for Canadian art brands and keep it all local.

With their one year anniversary coming up, now is the time to check Spirits & Splatters out for either a private party or simply a Pheobe-eque night on the town at their next event with your girlfriends. You can see their calendar of events here.

Sip sip, splatter splatter nuts!
