Giving Thanks for Autumn

Just like the way fall transforms the trees, the grass and the temperature, it also does a little something to each of us – making us yearn for cozy evenings, large mugs of tea, stacks of books to read, and great company in the comfort of a warm, inviting place. Kicking off the season each year, is thanksgiving, the epitome of Autumn for us Canadians, with long strolls amidst colourful trees, plenty of family time and feasting, and all those wonderfully relaxing habits of the season.

While the summer certainly brings joyous thoughts, with its warm sun and intense pull for outdoor activities, there’s something so charming about the fall and it’s transformative ways, both in nature and routine. When I think about the whirlwind that was summer, I am filled with anticipation for the more dormant months of the year, when rest, and all things peaceful, seem to take precedence.

A change of season gives us the chance to rethink the routine, to re-prioritize all those thoughts we had when the year turned anew in January, those ones that got washed away in summer’s hype. Be thankful this weekend not just for the good company, but for the transformation taking place around you – reminding us all to take a seat, a rest, a walk and enjoy the little things.

My family’s favourite escape – the cottage – still a work in progress, but perfect, all the same.
