Pet Peeve of the Week

Subject: Customer Service Employees who should NOT be Customer Service Employees

Last week, I ranted about the miserable customers that employees are unfortunately forced to deal with. Having worked in both retail and hospitality settings for the majority of my working years, I have dealt with my fair share of idiots. But, as the saying goes, ‘there are two sides to every story’. As a customer, you never want to deal with these types of employees…

If you hate your job, I don’t need to know it.

Just because you’re miserable, doesn’t mean I am. Please don’t act like greeting me (which is a job requirement) is a chore. I am a lovely person and you should want to know how I’m doing today. When you look like you hate your life so much that you are slumped over the counter, not even exerting enough effort to physically hold up your own body, it makes me internally cringe. Sure, working as a cashier may not be the most exciting job in the world. But it’s the job you’re doing. Don’t make me feel awkward because you have to ring in my purchase; it’s what you’re there for.

Come on Linda, get it together.

If you’re scary and mean, please stop working with the public.

The customer service industry is all about plastering on a smile and making the client feel great while they’re in your establishment. But some people are just not meant to work with the public. If you are so angry that you slam my beverage onto the table, sending a droplet directly into my eye, please quit immediately. If you are a real life ‘Big Bad Wolf’ and you huff, puff and blow the place down because you receive a request from a customer, stop working in the service industry. Sure, we’ve all dealt with outlandish requests, but fulfilling the customer’s wishes is part of the job. Just bring me my damn side plate already; it’s not going to kill you.

You just stole my soul and all feelings of happiness with one glance.

So here’s my advice to you:

If you have a horrible temper, become frustrated and annoyed easily by legitimate requests and hate the majority of the human race, then these jobs are not for you. Seriously, get a job that requires minimal interaction with other people and stew in your angry cubicle alone. Everyone else will be much happier without you…in a nutshell.

If you want to see the perfect example of someone who shouldn't work in this industry, watch the 2005 movie, "Waiting" and watch out for this server, Naomi. She is terrifying.
