Mulligans: a new golf game in town

In the game of golf, a “mulligan” refers to a chance to do-over a shot.

So, when a golf bar called Mulligans opens in downtown Ottawa, you can’t help but notice that they are doing just that: a do-over (or a second swing) at the traditional golf bar.

With the opening of Mulligans Golf Bar comes a completely fresh take on golf simulators including a rustic and convenient setting, a lively bar atmosphere and,  yes, a generous helping of hospitality.

Doesn’t sound like the typical golf bar experience, does it?

Sure, Mulligans is equipped with three unique HD golf simulators, all with multiple game settings. And golfers are provided with best-in-class Nike Vapor clubs for their round(s).  Annnd, as if that wasn’t enough to keep you entertained, there is also a Forza race car simulator on site.

Pretty bad ass, right?!

Now, this is all well and good for the avid golfer.  BUT, for a couple of girls who aren’t experts on the links (do not golf at all) and can barely navigate a Forza racetrack (which way is forward?), it takes a little more than bells and whistles to impress us.

And we were impressed.

The food, drink, and atmosphere at Mulligans really sets this spot apart. With a  menu crafted by Chef Jayce Edwards, formerly of the Albion Rooms, the eats are far superior to regular pub fare. The chicken and waffles are to die for and the skillet cookie with house-made ice cream is like no other.

And, with seasoned bartender/part-owner Andrew Grace behind the bar, craft cocktails are being slung with style. Their “Tiberius Caesar” has been top of mind since we left – a dash of red wine, some thai chili vodka and a burnt honey maple bacon rim make this THE best caesar in Ottawa. And we’ve sampled A LOT of caesars.

We were also taken with the lively bar atmosphere that spans not one, but two levels. On the main floor, the bar has a backdrop of charming exposed brick and a convivial spirit is brought to the place largely by the hospitality of the owners, who are incredibly present throughout the operation.

The top floor is a slightly more intimate area, but still equipped with a bar, a beautiful bay window overlooking downtown Ottawa and tonnes of space for parties, work functions, birthdays,  bachelor parties…..you get the point.

But it’s truly the passion and hospitality of the staff and owners that brings Mulligans to life.

Coaching us through a couple of swings, part-owner Chris Prendergast told us that anyone can come to Mulligans – experts or novices.  It’s not only a great spot to grab a beer and a bite after work, but also the ideal setting to practice your swing – whether you’re fine tuning your drive for the upcoming season or  simply trying to figure out how to make contact with that damn, tiny ball.

One thing’s for sure, us bogey babes have a long way to go until we’re sinking hole-in-ones  and if we can practice with a Tiberus Caesar in hand (you only need one hand on the shaft, right?) all the better.

We’ll be back soon, Mulligans.

Tee up.
