Bucket list to put a Spring in your step

I’ll be honest; I’m not really a big spring fan. In fact, it’s my least favourite season. Of course it’s wonderful to see the snow melt, wear a lighter jacket and if you’re as lucky as we in Ottawa have been for the last few days, score some unreal weather. But, with spring comes rain and puddles (in other words, wet socks. SHUDDER.). Not to mention, the weather is a little unpredictable, for example: it was almost 30 degrees with the humidex … tomorrow it will be 9. Talk about a tease, bring on summer.

But, I think my real issue with the spring is there’s not anything too exciting to look forward to. Fall gives you Thanksgiving, Halloween, carving pumpkins, jumping in leaves, new sports and television seasons. Winter’s got Christmas, skating, vacation days, family time, that first week we get snow and it’s actually exciting. And don’t even get me started on SUMMER. I have already been day dreaming about my favourite time of the year for weeks: patios, bbqs, sunshine, bike rides, cottages, popsicles, Bluesfest, Canada Day, HOPE BEACH! I could go on and on … June 21st get here faster.

So perhaps, now more than ever, a bucket list is in order to get us excited about a season that is really only a warm up for the one that follows it. And I have to say, I did pretttttyyyyyy well on my winter bucket list. Checking things off is so satisfying…. enjoy.

  1. Abandon the car

As a fairly recent car owner I know how easy it is to turn to your vehicle for even the shortest five minute errand. It’s convenient, it’s fast and hey, when the weather’s bad it can be a godsend. But, now that the weather is shaping up a little you have one less excuse to rely on your whip. I for one, LOVE riding my bicycle (nerd, yes). I’ve even been known to kick a hangover with a little cruise by the canal. Wind in my face? Works every time. So this spring, try to kick the keys and enjoy the fact that it’s not minus anything outside. Hallelujah.

  1. Throw a barbeque

I know for many, one of the most exciting things about warmer weather is getting the barbeque fired up. Truth me told, I do duck every time I light one … but I definitely enjoy the fruit of it’s labour. It’s almost like everything tastes better when hot off the grill. There is nothing like sitting around on a patio with your friends, drinking beers or sangria and laughing the night away. Nothing. Lucky for me, I just moved into a house that was a perfect patio for just this activity. It may not rival the summer where Kaylee had the entire roof of a building at her disposal and our Monday night barbeques became large and legendary. But, it may come close.

Take me back!

  1. Spring cleaning

Recently, Meghan and I have been on. the. same. page. 17 years of friendship might do that to you, I guess. So today when she posted her spring cleaning post after I had written my bucket list items YESTERDAY I was not shocked at all. Great minds Meggo, great minds. She definitely says it best, but there’s nothing like tidying up your life a little to make you feel great. If there was one thing I learned from having four strapping boys move my belongings earlier this month it was “You have A LOT of clothes.” Hint taken. Time to purge.

  1. Splurge: sunglasses

essential accessory.

A new season almost ALWAYS makes you itch to hit the mall, even if your wallet is empty. After two back to back weekends away I definitely need to keep my spending in check for the next month. Therefore, a full wardrobe revitalization (didn’t I JUST say I didn’t need more clothes? oops.) is not possible but I don’t think a full stray from the mall is possible either. I’ve decided if there is one absolutely essential thing you can splurge on in spring it’s sunglasses (say THAT 10 times fast). Those puppies are an everyday accessory that are going to be pretty much planted on your face every time you enter the great outdoors for the next five months. So unless you chronically lose your sunglasses (guilty) saving up for a stellar pair is acceptable in my books. Tip: My fave sunglasses finds for my overly small framed face have come from Banana Republic.

  1. Be a kid: spring edition

Any avid reader of my seasonal bucket lists will notice this item has become a permanent fixture. The reason being that I think it is vitally important to never take yourself too seriously. Life can get NUTS (in both the good and bad sense). So it’s necessary sometimes to remind yourself of the worry free ways your kid-self had. I also just adore doing anything spontaneous or competitive and child like things usually have an element of both. Last year, a friend of mine threw an Easter dinner for all our friends that couldn’t make it home. My parents live in Ottawa, so I didn’t meet the criteria but still scored an invite since my family goes big on brunch for “Pâques” and my supper plans were wide open. Kelly, the hostess with the mostest, had planted eggs filled with candy all over her house and backyard. She gave us all baskets and let us rip! Of course, we were ten adults practically tackling each other outside, dumping out each others baskets, slamming doors in faces and being all out unruly … but it’s up there in my list of extremely fun times. And if that wild batale royale doesn’t sound up your ally, paint some Easter eggs or splash around in a puddle. Should still do the trick.

  1. Go for a run

I must admit, I am not one of those people that love to run.

Someday.

They seem to exist but I’m not sure how. For exercise, I’m all about doing activities. Yoga, dance, bike rides, beach volleyball, swimming. Running for me just doesn’t have the same fun factor. But, I digress, having moved back close enough to the canal … there is a certain kind of satisfaction that comes from putting your iPod in and pounding the pavement on a nice day. Perhaps the best way to clear your head. Ever. So you can bet you’ll be able to find me on the path alongside one of Ottawa’s biggest attractions this season.

  1. Do something out of the ordinary

Ever have one of those weeks where it seems like nothing goes your way? You lose an important document, get locked out of your house, spill coffee on your white skirt and just when you think it can’t get any worse? You back into a flower pot and tear off half your bumper. When I get in a rut like this I always feel the need to compensate for it with something really fun to pick my spirits back up. My spring suggestion? Try something new. Tag along with your guy friends when they go fishing, pack a buddy in your front seat and drive out to Albert to stop at the world’s best french fry place, spend an afternoon at the art gallery, organize a co-ed game of friendly football, surprise your friends in Toronto with a secret road trip …. ……(this is the part where I ensure that Kaylee and Jess read my posts ;)). Whatever it is you chose to do, make sure it’s something that you wouldn’t do on the regular. As Kate would say, “You need some spice in your life.”

  1. Plant something

I will do this. Just watch.

When I was younger almost all of our summer vegetables came from my own garden. I have albums full of pictures of my three year old self hiding with my teddy among cucumber plants that were four times my size. And I’ll never forget the time I was chopping fresh cayenne peppers and rubbed my eyes in the process. Up there with dumbest moves I’ve made … and that’s saying something. Now unfortunately, my current home does not have a backyard and since most of our readers are probably in a similar situation, a full garden does not seem very plausible. Luckily, there is a little thing called “container gardening” which allows you to grow almost any vegetable inside of a pot. Tomatoes and peppers don’t take up much space and grow well inside a container. So, fresh veggie anyone? I know Jess the vegan will be proud of my backyard project anyway.

  1. Sangria contest

Did I mention I like being competitive? Anyone remember those friends I used to have before the Bachelor pool? Ya, me neither. So why not combine two of my favourite things … contests and Sangria. There a million ways to make Sangria with no two recipes alike. And it goes FAST. Pretty sure three of us were able to polish off a pitcher of sangria in no time last night. And if you’re going for all day sipping, you’re going to need a good amount. So why not get all your best gals to bring some supplies and compete for the title of Sangria queen. If you’re as competitive as my group of fun loving nuts, it’s sure to add a little somethin’ to your patio time. You may lose a friend or two but it’ll be worth it.

  1. Plan a trip

Miss this girl.

It’s almost a guarantee that everyone takes some sort of vacation time off in the summer. My office actually shuts down for an entire week to give everyone some vacay. Amazing? Yes. But with only those few select days and endless possibilities, it may be time to plan out where and when you want to be going. The last time I took a proper vacation was to visit one of my closest friends on the other side of the country for the Calgary Stampede. It was definitely a summer highlight and my tickets were booked by mid-April. Having something to look forward to always makes the trials and tribulations of day to day life a little more bearable.

On the third day of Christmas, I composed a bucket liiiist.

”It’s the most wonderful time of the year.” Right? Here are a few suggestions to ensure that this holiday / winter season is the best one yet.

  1. Buy yourself a present

To: Catherine, Love: Catherine. I know, I know it’s the season of giving. And I honestly do get more joy out of finding the perfect gift for those special people on my list than I do from opening presents. However, after seeing our wish lists yesterday, it’s pretty obvious that everyone has a few gifts they’d love to see under the tree. Despite Santa’s best work, there are usually one or two things he misses, so indulge in the spirit of the holidays and get yourself something you’ve been wanting for a long time.

  1. Smore date

For the long-term relationship, the newly together, or the first (or actually, maybe third) date, this one is sure to secure you a kiss underneath the mistle toe.

Romantic choice?

Plan an evening of Christmas movie favourites (you know how I feel) and cook up your favourite treat. No fireplace necessary, just buy the following supplies: marshmallows, milk chocolate, graham crackers, a candle and matches. Foray in the backyard for some sticks or add some kebab skewers to your shopping list and voila! A DIY winter desert that is sure to put a smile on anyone’s face.

  1. Plan a reunion

If you asked me what my favourite part of the holidays was, it would be (hands down) spending time with people I don’t get to see very often. My brothers from out of town, my godparents from France, my ex boyfriend’s parents, etc. Last night, I spent some time with some high school friends I don’t get to see nearly enough. So this Christmas take the lead on planning a reunion with that special group that deserves some serious catch-up time.

Still smiling after reunion 2011

  1. Make something from scratch

Our resident Betty Crocker, Meghan, could tell you in great detail how satisfying this is. With Christmas comes baking (and gaining 10 pounds), so whether it’s cookies, apple pie, Nanaimo bars or tourtiere, make yourself useful in the kitchen and channel your inner Martha Stewart. The results will make you beam with pride, even if you regret eating the nine spoonfuls of batter you consumed in the process.

  1. Be a kid

If you are an avid reader of my seasonal bucket lists, you will notice that this item is a permanent fixture on them all. That is because with big girl jobs, bills and relationships (etc..) even at the young age of 23, sometimes I have to remind myself that I’m still at the young end of the life scale. Winter is a perfect time to have a snowball fight, build a fort, make a snowman (or angel), decorate a gingerbread house, sing a Christmas Carol at the top of your lungs (badly), sit on Santa’s lap with a group of pals, unwrap a gift in an outrageously animal-like fashion or simply, remind yourself why you had a 364 day countdown to your favourite day of the year in your grade two agenda.

  1. Take a chalet day

    snow bunnies

Our ski loving readers will groan at the thought of sitting idly beside a gorgeous mountain and I will admit, one of my fondest memories from last winter was hitting the slopes again (after  9 years) with Kate. But, if you’re not the downhill type, still venture away for a day in the mountains and out of the city. Curl up with your favourite book or magazine in a cozy spot by the fire and high five your snowboarding pals as they come in from the cold.

  1. Skate on the canal

On the note of winter sports, this may be more of a late January activity than something you can cross off during your Christmas vacation, but it is an important winter bucket list item all the same. Even if you’re not currently residing in Ottawa, I IMPLORE you to make the trip to skate on the Rideau Canal.

Yummmmmmm.

Sometimes, living in a city your whole life makes you take for granted what it has to offer but make no mistake, there’s nothing like skating (Bambi legs and all) outdoors with hundreds of other people, in Ottawa’s downtown. Throw a beavertail into the mix and you have yourself a perfect winter’s day. Just make sure you bring a mitted hand to hold as well.

  1. Random act of kindness

As much as the Christmas season is about spending your hard earned dollars on the ones you love, it is also about thinking of those who don’t have that privilege. Recently my job has allowed me to hear the most heart warming stories. This week I interviewed a nine-year-old who donated all of their birthday presents toToy Mountain. It’s inspiring and it’s the right thing to do. So whether you add some canned goods to your shopping list, spend an hour at a soup kitchen, pick up the tab of the person behind you in the Tim Horton’s drive-through or buy a coffee for the homeless person you pass on the street every day, do something for a good cause. It will warm your heart as much as the people you’ve helped.

  1. Write down your resolutions

Whether you admit it or not, EVERYONE has things they want to improve on for 2012. I think it’s a very healthy thing to do to not only make some New Year resolutions, but to write them down as well. Seeing a visceral list of changes you want to make will remind you to follow through. Plus, there’s nothing more satisfying then being able to cross an item off. Literally, nothing.

  1. Take it all in

One of my favourite episodes, from one of my favourite shows, is when Pam and Jim (one of my favourite couples) from The Office are about to get married and Pam tells Jim to take mental pictures throughout, in an attempt to never forget their special day. Even though the holiday season is much anticipated, sometimes it can go by before you know it. So take that extra moment when your family is gathered around the tree, or when your bestie links your arm to keep warm, to remind yourself of the magic of Christmas and all the happiness that comes with it. In a nutshell.

New season, new bucket list

Fall is truly a beautiful time of year. I don’t just mean aesthetically with the changing of colours, a cascade of crunchy bright leaves and streets lined with adorable cropped jackets and ankle booties. It comes with a different charm than its preceding and sometimes over bearing season. No one can help feel like a little part of your personal freedom dies with the end of summer. Students go back to school, working ones have to look all the way to Christmas for vacation time, and a whole new slew of courses, plans, and schedules take over your once care-free patio sipping, sprinkler streaking life. But, fall is charming, romantic, cozy and full of possibilities.

Summer Bucket List

It – the season of milkshakes, the beach, humid-crazy hair and cocktails by the pitcher – is here and I could not be more pleased.

With every change of season comes a personal want to change also. Your to-do list becomes a little longer. You say things like, “This summer I’m going to read at LEAST one book a month.” You have new priorities to lose those bikini-prohibiting pounds. The world is your oyster and you know it.

For this reason, I think it’s no surprise that lately I’ve heard some of my pals talking about creating a “Summer Bucket List” of sorts. Activities or goals arranged for maximum enjoyment of (mostly) everyone’s favourite season.

Whether it be a boyfriend and girlfriend’s list of romantic dates, two sisters getting up to no good or simply a personal list to expand your sense of adventure and make every warm moment worthwhile.

The following are a few suggestions that will be appearing on my own lengthly list. I highly encourage you to create one of your own, incorporating the best of what summer has to offer.

1. Attend an outdoor concert.

- Many of my friends hit the road this week destined for Manchester, Tennessee for one of North America’s biggest musical festivals: Bonnaroo. While the thought of seeing the likes of Eminem, Florence and the Machine and Mumford & Sons was tempting, I’m saving myself for Ottawa’s Bluesfest, with the main event being The Black Keys. Outdoor music can be on a smaller, less expensive scale too. The nuts are hitting Westfest this weekend to hear some great local acts play on the streets of Westboro. Music, warm weather and beer sipping seem to go hand in hand year after year.

2. Be a kid

- I live my life with the mentality that you should never be too busy to have some fun. Reverting to your child years, bare feet, popsicle in hand, running through a sprinkler is one of the easiest ways to get this accomplished. Whether you stop in the park for a good old swing on the ol’ sets or impulse-buy a slip n’ slide for hours of unabashed good, clean, fun, bringing out the kid in you is sure to put a smile on your face.

Great face, Kate

3. Take a (road) trip

- If I had it my way (won the lottery, or had a sugar daddy) I would have Europe penciled in to my summer itinerary. Lucky nut Meghan, has already checked that one off her list and Kaylee will in the fall … but for this nut it’s not in the cards just yet. No reason to put on a pout. A road trip, a great mix-tape, a few bags of your favourite potato chips and your four best gals badly singing to every tune, makes for almost as an amazing time as a cross continent voyage. Take a weekend off, pick a city and leave the rest up to fate and spontaneity.

Re-creating this scene minus scarves and winter coats

4. Spend an entire lazy day on a dock

- With summer comes camping, cottaging and days spent entirely slothed over an inner-tube, soaking up the rays and the essence of the season. If you have your own family cottage, great. If you don’t, find someone who does. If you’re adventurous, camp. And if you’re wild, throw a rager (don’t swim & drink!). No matter what kind of lifestyle you live, whether it be tranquil deck reading or daring cliff jumping, make your way out of the city and into cottage country. Some way, some how.

5. Sail the canal (Part II)

- Last year for my birthday we had a hilarious and amazing idea: buy an inflatable raft (approx $30) and set sail on the Ottawa Canal. Beers nestled under our toes, we spent hours lazily (and sometimes not so lazily to avoid oncoming tourist ferries, yikes!) paddling along through one of Ottawa’s most beautiful attractions. Sure Meghan may or may not have gotten really sunburnt, fallen into the canal and somewhat hated Kate and I for our over the top enthusiasm, it remains one of last year’s highlights for me, and I plan to set sail again this year. Ahoy!

This picture is deceiving... Meghan looks pleased

6. Take a personal day

- If you’re anything like me you’ve had your nose pressed up to the glass of your place of employment on a nice day thinking, “why, Why, WHY am I stuck in here?” Not to condone playing hooky, or calling in sick for an important meeting but when the time is right use one of your precious vacation days for yourself. Buy a new book, get a pedicure, hit the beach, stay out later than you should with your friends and remember that all work and no play makes for getting a little “cray-cray”. (Translation: crazy)

7. Find a new, fun way to stay healthy

- While it’s those long winter months where every woman vows to hit the gym and burn off that turkey poundage, it’s the summer months that make it so easy to do so. There is literally a fun way to exercise at every corner. As mentioned, I bike almost everywhere I go in the summertime. Not out of necessity, I actually enjoy it! There’s something about the wind in your face that makes you feel great to be alive. Of course there are other just as fun alternatives: hiking, rollerblading, canoeing, water skiing, swimming, beach volleyball, etc. Pick your preference and feel the pounds melt away.

double the fun

8. Spoil yourself with a summer dress

- All winter I count down the days till summer so that I can really make use of my closet which is packed to the brim with floral prints and bright colours. If you’re going to be doing a little spending in the next couple weeks a new dress to show a little shoulder and a little thigh is “wear” it’s at. (ha!) Just make sure to consult Kaylee Pare before you do.

non-stop style

9. See fireworks (… or make some yourself a la Katy Perry)

- I remember watching the sky open up with fireworks from my Dad’s shoulders thinking some really powerful magician was playing a trick on the world. Even though now I’m probably a little too big to relive this moment exactly how I remember it, I will stretch out on some grass with a blanket to take in some summer ‘works for sure. Canada Day comes to mind, where the Capital is the place to be, but if the show in your area isn’t magical, read item #4 above and don’t forget to pack some fireworks into your duffle bag.

10. Reunite with your 6 best buds

- I saved it for last, but really it’s #1 on my list. For seven nuts that are spread out between three cities it’s hard to find us all in one place. I’m sure you can relate. So whip out your planners, put a big “X” through one weekend of prior commitments and dedicate some time to the ones who keep you sane. There is no one I laugh harder with than these six sisters and no one I would rather spend a perfect hot summer night with… in a nutshell.
