There’s been a lot of controversy surrounding the poppy over the last few weeks. White poppies for peace have sprung up again, causing much debate about the meaning of the red poppy and whether it glorifies war.
Personally, I’ll wear my red poppy with pride today. To me, the red poppy is a sign of solidarity and of gratitude. I wear my poppy to remind me how blessed I am to live in a free country. I wear my poppy to celebrate those who have and who continue to place the greater good of our nation ahead of themselves. I wear my poppy to honour the lives lost during times of war. I wear my poppy to thank the people who fight for our country, so that my family and friends remain safe.
We can all hope and pray for peace. But, let’s not take away from the important nature of Remembrance Day by politicizing the poppy. Nuts, I encourage you to wear your red poppies with me today and honour our veterans and Armed Forces. Lest we forget.
