Last night’s MTV Video Music Awards got everyone talking…about so. many. things. If you missed the action-packed awards show, here’s all you need to know to survive any type of water-cooler situation at the office today. If you witnessed the show, like me, I know you want to relive it.
10. Katy Perry, who is clearly trying to sway the conversation away from her relationship status, succeeded in doing so by channeling Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake circa 2001, in a full denim ensemble with Riff Raff by her side. Bringing #tbt to a whole new level on the carpet…stylists everywhere were shuddering in disgust. Also, it wasn’t Thursday.
9. Meanwhile, Amber Rose wore …nothing.
8. Ariana Grande opened the show with her new song “Break Free” which then transitioned to Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda”, an opportunity Nicki used to take booty-shaking to a whole new level.
7. Following that, Nicki disappeared while Jessie J and Ariana Grande kicked off the trio’s hit “Bang Bang”. When Nicki re-emerged, both hands were clutching her dress, and remained there the entire performance. Clearly, the world is suffering from sort of zipper shortage, or something ripped backstage and she just said “f*ck it”. The world continues to speculate, but no one can deny that she rocked this moment, all things considered.
6. The Orange is the New Black girls presented an Award, looking utterly fabulous, and Crazy Eyes made an appearance that OITNB fans just couldn’t handle. HOW long ’til season 3?? Wahhh.
5. Iggy Azalea and Rita Ora killed it in matching spidey costumes while singing their hit “Black Widow”.
4. Miley Cyrus won Video of the Year for Wrecking Ball, and sent her homeless friend, Jesse, who was her date for the evening, up to accept her award. It was a special and surprising moment for everyone, his voice shook as he spoke in front of Hollywood’s A-listers and the rest of the world, asking people to donate to Hollywood’s Homeless Centre, Mr Friend’s Place. Miley sobbed on the sideline, and Katy Perry and Sam Smith were the most confused.
3. All things J Lo. First, she wore this on the red carpet, and, somewhere, scattered worldwide, her exes all suffered from heart attacks, as did the rest of America.
Then, she watched Nicki Minaj do her opening number with an unmistakable look of shame on her face.
2. Blue Ivy, Beyonce and Jay’s beautiful girl, made a very public appearance and captured the world with her first ever Single Ladies hand gesture as her mommy killed it on stage. WATCH:
Also. She loves “Flawless” just as much as the rest of us. She woke up like ‘dis.
1. And in the end, nothing else matters, because Beyonce proved once again that this is her world, and we’re just living in it. Queen Bey achieved something no one ever has, by performing her entire album in one rendition, from Mine, to Drunk in Love, to Blow, XO, Flawless and all your other favourites. Camera pans to the audience, with Jay-Z and Blue Ivy bopping to the beat, gave us all hope that the family was NOT in turmoil. And then, like a gift from God (or, more accurately, a very well planned stint to kill those rumours) Jay-Z and Blue took to the stage to present the Queen with the Michael Jackson Award, but not before very publicly kissing and embracing, giving the world what they needed to rest assured that our favourite couple isn’t going anywhere…and the Queen reigns.
