Alright, ladies – grab a tissue. Now, I’m not entirely sure if anyone remembers this movie, which was released in 2004 – but personally, I was a huge fan. With a rather interesting storyline and some decent actors, Wicker Park also had one of the most bang-on soundtracks of the past decade. Released around the time of Garden State, Lost in Translation and a few other doozies, I remember finding myself overwhelmed with new music to pounce on.
Here’s the (spoiler!) final scene from Wicker Park, a film that follows Josh Hartnett as a lovesick puppy who’s heartbroken after the woman of his dreams supposedly picks up and leaves without any explanation, despite the fact that they’re in the prime of their passionate relationship. The film documents a confused Hartnett “moving on” with his life as much as he can, until signs of his former flame begin to surface, and he starts searching relentlessly to find out why she left – unraveling a ploy of obsession and deceit that’s deliberately kept them apart. A film that’s equal parts thinker and romantic-drama, my enjoyment boils down to the final scene.
The main reason I fell in love? This scene and the use of one of everyone’s favourite tear-jerker ballads, “The Scientist” by Coldplay. In the last scene, when the two lovers realize why they’ve been kept apart and they finally find each other again to the pretty piano of this timeless love song – I melt. If this doesn’t warm your heart on a gloomy Monday, I don’t know what will. Take it away, Coldplay.
