Although a universally amazing tune, this Monday Movie Moment goes out to the grade six gal in all of us who remembers swooning over the romance between then-young heartthrobs Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Philippe in Cruel Intentions. The song “Colorblind” by the Counting Crows – as played here when a jaded Sebastian (Ryan) chases down the beautiful Annette (Reese) who he’s just realized is the best thing that’s ever happened to him – is one of the most romantic and haunting uses of a song in movie history. Needless to say, all of us ladies remember and often reference “the escalator scene.” Leading into a less PG film moment between the two of them, this song became an unforgettable and wonderful introduction to not-so-mainstream romance-rock for us younglings at that age. “Colorblind”, which is about finding meaning and being ready for a sort of re-birth, is a perfect lyrical match for Philippe’s character, a once cold-hard player who can’t help but melt into a gooey lovebird once he meets Annette. And no, none of us have ever imitated the scene in an airport or mall before; racing to the top of the escalator to recite the lines to each other…who would do that.
Happy Monday, lovebirds!
