Now, before I get into discussions of buns in the oven and tiny tots running around, I should probably preface this topic by noting that it doesn’t reflect my own priorities at this stage in my life. As I see it, I’ve got quite some time before babies start crawling around my brain.
That being said, I know so many fabulous woman – my age, younger and older – who have recently given birth to darling little babes and are having the time of their life watching them grow into real people. A few of whom, coincidentally, have asked me if I have any suggestions for playful kid-friendly tunes that are a welcome departure from Baby Mozart and the Dora the Explorer soundtracks. Despite not having babies on my brain, I obviously possess a natural maternal instinct (and a musical one, at that) in which I can already predict I’ll make sure my future children get all the right music education beginning in the belly, to the basin, to the bath and beyond.
So, I thought – why not? Let’s put together a playlist of fun, friendly, PG-rated tunes for all of those marvelous new Moms, Dads, Uncles and Aunts out there who want to enjoy music alongside their tots, without sacrificing their own sanity or child’s early music wherewithal. Who knows, maybe by the time little Johnny or Jane hit pre-school, they’ll be preaching the gospel of McCartney or The Shins to their tiny convoy of next generationers on the playground.
In an attempt to avoid your kid chanting “Sexy and I Know It” before they can rhyme their ABC’s, here’s a mix of childproof melodies that will have them boogying right alongside Ma and Pa:
She’s A Rainbow – The Rolling Stones
We Are Going To Be Friends – The White Stripes
You and I – Ingrid Michaelson
Dreams – Priscilla Ahn
D’yer Maker – Led Zeppelin (This was little Jess’ favourite song growing up)
Be Gentle With Me – The Boy Least Likely To
Tenderness – General Public
Strawberry Swing – Coldplay
Toothpaste Kisses – The Maccabees
Tutti Frutti – Little Richard
Two Doors Down – Mystery Jets
For The Price Of A Cup Of Tea – Belle and Sebastian
I’ve Got This Friend – The Civil Wars
Heart of Life – John Mayer
Over and Over – Sarah Blasko
Obladi Oblada – The Beatles
Constellations – Jack Johnson
I’m Into Something Good – The Bird and the Bee
Beautiful Boy – John Lennon
Something in Common – Free Energy
This is amazing Jess! I just started mentoring a group of 11 year olds and was hoping to avoid Justin Bieber when it came to our music related activities (especially since he really isn’t PG at all). These songs are great for kids of all ages, including 26 year old kids like me
I can’t believe there is a group called The Bird And The Bee. That was the name of our wedding and the theme for everything wedding related. (My wife’s last name is Weatherbee.) I can’t wait to tell her. (I’m such a nerd.)
