Could this be a yoga practice that strictly works out your glutes?
Or maybe it’s a yoga class set to booty-poppin’ tunes?
Or maaaaybe Bubba Sparxxx is in da house!!! Booty-booty-booty-booty – rockin’ everywhere!
These were a few of the thoughts that crossed my mind when I first heard about Buti Yoga.
And last Tuesday, all of my Buti questions were answered when Samantha Murray asked the Nuts to take part in one of Ottawa’s first Buti Yoga classes. We also had the chance to chat with Murray, who happens to be among a handful of certified Buti Yoga instructors across Canada.
“Buti Yoga bridges the gap between yoga and group fitness,” explained Murray. “It’s an intense workout that incorporates plyometrics and elements of tribal dance with more traditional elements of yoga.”
But Buti has yet to fully make its way to Ottawa. Created in California in 2010 by founder Bizzie Gold, Buti Yoga came from Gold’s many years of teaching various types of “traditional” yoga . Eventually, her classes evolved to incorporate the more feminine, hip and mind-opening style, that is Buti.
Learning Buti from a Master teacher based on the west coast, Murray says she’s excited to bring this yoga practice to Ottawa, at last. I should take this opportunity to say that Murray has had not one, but TWO children and her body is bangin’. It can only be one thing: the Buti.
So, where does the term Buti come from? “Buti means ‘the cure to something hidden below the surface’ in the Indian dialect Marathi,” explained Murray. “This particular style of yoga focuses on the action of spiraling with the intention of removing energy blockages in the 1st and 2nd chakras thus awakening women’s divine energy, or Shakti.” (First and second chakras pictured below as Mulhadara – Red and Svadhistana – Orange).
Murray told us that Buti achieves cardio, strength conditioning, fat-burning and flexibility in one single format that is incredibly fun and also incredibly empowering. “As a dancer most of my life and now a yoga teacher, I’ve always been drawn to the idea of incorporating fluid dance movements and music into my yoga practice – I’m the girl in the back of the yoga class, shaking my hips in down dog when a good tune comes on.”
Murray said something else about Buti that resonated with the Nuts: Buti offers a safe environment for women to find their own sense of spirituality, sexuality, confidence and power, which results in a tribe of women who support each other rather than compete with one another.
We can get down with that! Meghan and I were eager to get started.
Murray began the class by telling us to put all shyness and self-consciousness aside. Hip “spiraling” can be a tricky thing to master, but if you’re willing to have fun with it- as Murray instructed us to do – then that’ s exactly what will happen. Sweaty, sweaty fun.
Interested in Buti yoga? Try out Murray’s FREE class being held at Studio X on Tuesday, September 1 at 8 pm.
The regular Buti program, led by Murray, will begin the following week, still on Tuesdays at 8 pm at Studio X.
At $100 for 12 weekly classes or $10/drop-in, the Buti program will begin by working on the foundation of Buti for the first few weeks, adding in new moves each week as students progress in the practice.
It’s time to work that Buti, Ottawa.
