The Golden Globes 2015: the Good, the Bad and the Awkward

Awards season is upon us nuts! This is the time of year when all of Hollywood repeatedly get together to celebrate their many accomplishments. I love the Golden Globes because they are the house party of awards shows. Everyone has plenty to drink and it’s understood that your friends will make fun of you at some point during the evening. In my opinion, this year, the good definitely outweighed the bad and the awkward. Read on for my favourite and most-cringe worthy moments from last night…

THE GOOD:

Amy Poehler and Tina Fey

As always, these two kept me in stitches. Watching these two hilarious women interact is like watching my besties. Their chemistry is so on point and (for the most part) their jokes were fantastic.

tina & amy

The biggest highlight, in my opinion: the joke about George Clooney’s lifetime achievement award. Tina quips,

“Alamuddin [George’s new wife] is a human rights lawyer who worked on the Enron case, an adviser to Kofi Annan on Syria and was appointed to a three-person commission investigating rules of war violations in the Gaza strip. So tonight her husband is getting a lifetime achievement award.”

The HFPA President’s Speech

Theo Kingma is the President of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and he delivered a moving speech about Hollywood standing united against anyone who would repress free speech. This was a fantastic moment and he received a much-deserved standing ovation.

president speech

“Together we will stand united against anyone who would repress free speech anywhere from North Korea to Paris.”

Common and John Legend’s Acceptance Speech

The night was full of socially conscious and moving speeches. Common and John Legend won the Golden Globe for Best Original Song, “Glory”, which was featured in the film “Selma” which focuses on the Civil Rights Movement, Dr. Martin Luther King and the Million Man March. As Common stated, “Selma is now”.

common john legend

“As I got to know the people of the Civil Rights movement, I realize I am the hopeful black woman who was denied her right to vote. I am the caring white supporter killed on the front lines of freedom. I am the unarmed black kid who maybe needed a hand but instead was given a bullet. I am the two fallen police officers murdered in the line of duty. “Selma” has awakened my humanity…”

Ricky Gervais Still Mocking Everyone

If you remember from a few years ago, Ricky Gervais took some serious heat when he hosted the Golden Globes in 2012. People had a lot of things to critique, but basically, everyone felt he went a bit too far with his mocking of the celeb guests in the audience. Last night, however, Gervais’ 3 minutes on stage as a presenter were hysterical as he acknowledged the fact that people hate when he makes fun of them, but continued to do it anyway. Plus, he brought up John Travolta’s epic fail at pronouncing Idina Menzel’s name. He did such a good job that twitter was up in arms suggesting that he should be invited back as host after his hiatus. Since Tina and Amy have said this is their last year, will it be #Gervais2016?? Only time will tell.

“It’s going well eh? Let’s not ruin it, by me saying…anything, really. No one wants to see me insult any of you rich, beautiful, over-privileged celebrities. No ordinary people at home want to see that because you’re better than ordinary people”

Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Acceptance Speech

Where Amy Adams failed (read on for more details), Maggie Gyllenhaal greatly succeeded in celebrating good roles for women in Hollywood. She went on to celebrate the “complicated women” in her life and it was FAB.

maggie gyllenhaal

“And what I think is new is the wealth of roles for ACTUAL women in television and in film. That’s what I think is revolutionary, and evolutionary, and it’s what’s turning me on.”

George Clooney Talking About Amal

George was honoured with a lifetime achievement award and his speech was quite good. But the stand out moment was when he spoke about his new wife, Amal. Clooney rarely gushes and this moment was so perfect.

“Amal, whatever alchemy it is that brought us together, I couldn’t be more proud to be your husband”

THE BAD:

Ryan Seacrest on the Red Carpet

For some of the nuts (ahem, Kaylee) the Red Carpet pre-show is almost as important as the show itself. Imagine her disappointment when Ryan Seacrest was completely useless the whole time. All he did was talk about Los Angeles traffic and thanked people for being there. No legit questions were asked and he presented George and Amal with mean “Game Over” shirts. #fail

Not Enough Tina and Amy

I wasn’t a huge fan of Margaret Cho’s “North Korean General” bit that was featured throughout the show (read on for more on this). It was especially annoying because it took away from the time where Tina and Amy bantered. These women are so hilarious when it’s just the two of them talking and we just didn’t get enough of it. AND they’re not even hosting again next year. A bit of a let down…

Amy Adams’ Acceptance Speech

Her red carpet look was great but her acceptance speech was a nightmare. First of all, she kept stating that she was ill-prepared. I’m sorry, but when you’re a nominee, you have one JOB: prepare in case you win. She was all over the place with the people she was thanking and then, tried to acknowledge strong female voices in the industry. It was a nice thought, but the execution was awkward.

Frances McDormand’s Face

The actress from Olive Kitteredge probably should have stayed home last night. Literally every time the camera hit her she was just soooooo unimpressed. I get that Amy Adams’ speech sucked, but you could at least pretend to care that she just thanked you.

THE AWKWARD:

5o Shades of Grey Stars

Remember how many stars were linked to the 50 shades of grey movie before we learned it would be Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dorman? Remember when their terrible chemistry as presenters made me question how they could possibly have filmed like 500 sex scenes together? After last night I’m really uninterested in seeing their portrayals of Christian Grey and his puppet.

Chrissy Tiegen’s Ugly-Cry

This beautiful woman got caught in the midst of the most awkward happy (??) cry ever. Honestly, what is happening with her face? It’s cringe-worthy.

Jeremy Renner Creeping on J.Lo

J. Lo, as always, wowed us with her ability to be SUCH a babe. I mean, honestly, does the woman age? I can’t blame Jeremy Renner for noticing that she’s smokin’ hot but when he joked around that her breasts were “globes” it was fairly awkward for everyone. Luckily, J.Lo laughed it off and the show went on, but come on dude. Boob-puns? Really?

Margaret Cho and Meryl Streep

As I mentioned, I wasn’t super into the North Korean General bit that kept playing out during the show. I loved Tina and Amy’s banter regarding the North Korean government’s attempt to ban The Interview, but the general just didn’t work for me. When they forced Meryl to pose with Margaret Cho, I was just so uncomfortable.

Matthew’s Beard

Seriously. Why does it look like that?
