We are experiencing a serious cold snap here in Ottawa. I won’t complain about it too much because we have been blessed with a fairly mild winter thus far…but when the temps fall lower than -20, it’s all too easy to pull down the blinds and hibernate.
Our friends at Petsafe reached out to us because they want to make sure that our furry friends were still getting enough exercise this winter, even when it’s more tempting to watch another episode of Making a Murderer instead of going for a walk. The reason we love Petsafe so much is because they not only make awesome products that we know and love, but they also do regular campaigns to bring awareness to issues of pet health.
Research shows that daily 30-60 minute walks (depending on the breed) can help keep dogs healthy, happy and fulfilled. A daily walk isn’t just essential for their physical health, which helps to control their weigh, muscle and bones, but it’s also important for their mental well-being. The same goes for us humans. Not only do you get the regular benefits of walking outdoors, like fresh air, exposure to sunshine (hopefully) and exercise, but in colder temperatures, your body will work harder to keep you warm, burning more calories to do so!
So, instead of hibernating, why not hit up a local dog park or a winter trail? We take Winston to the big, open off-leash park by our house every day (approximately 4 times – yes he’s spoiled) and he is the happiest when he can run around, dig for sticks and bury his snout in the snow. Plus, he gets pretty tuckered out after a long walk, which is always a good thing!
To encourage us to keep walking this winter, Petsafe sent Wintson an Easy Sport Harness. We tried out this new harness and have found it really great for our longer walks. It’s easy to put on and take off, has reflective trim for visibility in the dark and leads from the back, rather than the neck, which is ideal. While I am not big on running outdoors in the winter, I think this will be the perfect harness for when Win and I hit the pavement come spring.
Because they’re the best, Petsafe is also offering an Easy Sport Harness to one lucky inanutshell pet parent!
This contest is now closed. Congratulations to our winner, Sarah M! Thanks to all who entered; check back regularly for more awesome giveaways!
*Special thanks to Petsafe for sponsoring this post! We only partner with brands and products that we use and love.
I am definitely hibernating a little bit this winter.. Thanks for the motivation to get my dog out for walks more often! Although Juno hates the cold more than I do!
Paul and I were talking about getting gnarly a harness like this one, glad to see you recommend it. G loves his trail walks, and your article reminder makes me think we will be fitting in a family hike this wknd
Glad to hear your recommendations about this harness. We are looking at getting no one for gnarly for the summer!!
My bf and I have two westies (Hugo and Simba). As terriers, they love to be out for walks and for playing at the dog parks. Thank you for the chance! =)
