After living in several apartments with balconies that barely fit 3 people, it’s an absolute luxury to now have a private patio right on King West with plenty of room to spare. So when May 24 long weekend rolled around (the official kick-off to gardening season) I felt the need to spruce up my bare, cement-clad space with a ton of greens, and inevitably, a few piles of dirt. With a couple new planters, many bags of soil, a (cute!!) yellow watering can, $25 worth of herbs, and (of course) a freshly-made Caesar, a new hobby was born! Although I am a huge lover of flowers and all things green, I have a habit of over or under watering things once they enter my home, sooner or later destined for the garbage chute. In other words, this could be a hobby with a very sad ending. However, with a determined roommate (bf) by my side and plenty of Vitamin D exposure on my patio, I hope to report back in August with an overgrown garden and a full belly (cue the herbs.)
When deciding on the herbs to grow, we of course opted for those we use most. Plenty of basil for Caprese salad, rosemary for marinades, cilantro for guac and salads, and parsley for tabouleh (potted separately). I’m sure as the herbs (hopefully) grow, we’ll discover new ways to use them. If you’re trying this at home, be sure to read the instructions on space requirements for each – plants need their personal space too!
On to the veggie planter…I’m slightly obsessed with kale so the fact that it’s now growing on my patio, is quite exciting! We’re also attempting to grow tomatoes and jalapenos. Tomatoes need some major space to grow, so we’ve planted quite a few in separate planters around the patio.
With a few flowers potted around the patio as well, we’ve transformed the space from city slate to green oasis. I hope to share some gardening tips as I go, and if you have any to share, please comment below! (Rhyming is fun.)
