With Valentine’s Day just a few days away, I knew it was time to let my inner Betty Crocker loose and serve up some special treats for my loved ones. I was torn on what to make – all I knew is I wanted the end result to be cute and heart shaped. I was trolling around the internet and stumbled upon many options, but when I found this recipe for Valentine’s Day Rice Krispie Squares I was instantly sold.
I remember making Rice Krispie squares all throughout my childhood. And with a small twist, this tried-and-true classic is sure to put a smile on your sweetheart’s face this Valentine’s Day.
Directions:
1. Melt butter or margarine over a low heat.
2. Slowly stir in marshmallows, and let melt completely.
3. Once melted, remove from heat. Add desired food colouring and stir well.
4. Mix in Rice Krispies until coated evenly with marshmallow mixture.
5. Spoon mixture into a greased dish and flatten with a spoon. Let cool.
6. Once cooled, grease your cookie cutters and cut heart shaped treats out.
What started out as a genius idea to re-create “conversation hearts” was quickly dashed when it became clear that the uneven surface of these treats would not work well with frosting. However, you can frost them and add sprinkles, which would probably look pretty cute!
In the end, I left my treats plain, and they were still a huge hit. Delicious, festive and shaped to show your love. What more could your Valentine want?
