Couture shows are like no other, where “runway to real way” is an impossible feat, and hand-sewn beading runs rampant for a weekend of pure luxury. Not made for the humble folk, but for the likes of Grace Coddington, perusing the looks for her next epic Vogue editorial, or Daphne Guinness, seeking out a new gala ensemble, and droves of A-list stylists looking for that best dressed look. Here’s a recap of the most recent runway, Spring 2014 Couture:
The Least Wearable
From sparkly see-through jumpsuits to gingham knee and elbow pads, this season brought us, as always, those looks that just do not make much sense for the real world. As a Chanel devotee, it makes me sad to include 2 of Karl’s looks in this category, but the matching rollerblade attire put me over the edge.
The I-wouldn’t-be-upset-if-these-ended-up-in-my-closet looks
While couture shows display the designs only consumable by, and appropriate for, the world’s 1%, there are certainly those few looks that leave you wanting more. I would be more than happy to dance the night away in Ulyana’s lingerie-inspired teal fringe dress, or show up at a black tie event in Vionnet’s pleated coral masterpiece. A girl’s gotta dream, right?
The Red Carpet Worthy Looks
This is what A-list red carpet moments are made of. The usual suspects – Elie Saab, Chanel, Versace and Zuhair Murad – sent a myriad of gorgeous gowns down the runway, leading countless stylists to fend for the latest and greatest designs destined for Awards, premieres and galas to come. The couture shows display the utmost attention to detail, with designs that are hand sewn, and spared of no expense …this season was no exception.
The Outrageous
When Maison Martin Margiela is involved, you know there’s going to be an “outrageous” category to the runway line-up. While always thought-provoking and truly inspired, the looks from couture can often you leave you… head scratching. From Ulyana’s down comforter dome gown, to Schiaparelli’s bowling ball-sized sleeves, and Giambattista Valli’s neon tube-top, oversized peplum gown, there were more than a couple question marks on the runway this season.
My Faves
These are those looks I could stare at for hours and never tire of. They range from simply flawless (Elie Saab) to artistically moving (Vionnet & Giambattista Valli) and incredibly poetic (Valentino). Cara Delevigne, Karl’s muse of the moment, made headlines by closing the show as the Chanel bride, with a mini Chanel cutie following her lead, and a modern/glitzy/sporty gown that couldn’t be ignored.
I must note (no pun intended) that I fell in love at first sight with the Valentino music gown while crafting this post over the weekend – and on Sunday night, didn’t little miss Katy Perry wear it to the Grammy’s? You’ll see here that it looked just… ahem… a tad better on the runway…
