After four seasons of sexism versus feminism, smoke-filled office spaces, adultery, advertising and meetings capped off with bourbon, I was beyond excited for the fifth season of AMC’s hit series, Mad Men. Unfortunately, season five has been postponed until who-knows-when in 2012 and that means my fix of lead character, Don Draper, will just have to wait. . .or so I thought.
I was strolling through Rideau Centre yesterday when my jaw dropped at the sight of the infamous silhouette of Don Draper in the display window of Banana Republic!
Janie Bryant, costume designer of Mad Men, has worked in collaboration with BR to create a collection that is completely 60’s inspired and gorgeous. Released early last week, this 65 piece line features men’s and women’s clothing as well as a few accessories and (almost) every piece is to die for. If you’re hoping to revamp your office wardrobe for September, then this collection is a must . . . especially if your boss looks anything like Don. Wishful thinking ?
Aside from the resurgence of fictional heart-throb, Don, Banana’s new line is particularly inspiring because of the women’s pieces. Each piece is reflective of and inspired by the female characters in the show, Betty, Peggy and Joan. Betty is the essence of delicate, feminine beauty, with a long, slender figure. Peggy, the petite and reserved dresser, oozes early feminism with her ferocious presence, despite her mini sized self. And Joan emits true 60’s hollywood femininity with a full, curvaceous figure.
Here are a few items that represent the dynamic clothing line, encompassing all forms of femininity and so clearly inspired by the leading ladies of the show:
