Wardrobe Makeover for 2012

The best thing about ringing in a new year (aside from champagne and a major excuse to celebrate) is the chance for a fresh slate. Although we all make heaps of resolutions we may or may not keep, there is one thing that can easily be achieved with a few simple steps and a bit of time spent in your very own chaotic closet.
This is your chance to de-clutter, reorganize and rethink your wardrobe altogether, changing the way you dress throughout this fresh new year.

1. Get RID of anything you haven’t worn in two years.
I read that piece of advice in a magazine once, and I think it’s a great rule of thumb. I continually keep clothing that I think I’ll one day wear (I even have pairs of jeans I’ve kept for when “I’m painting my first house”…so ridiculous.) There are, of course, certain pieces that should be kept, like ones that were an investment or ones you may want to pass down generations some day. But all the rest; the ripped, the stained, the too small, big, long, short, get rid of them now, because all they’re doing is clogging up your closet and making it more difficult to find what you really want to wear. They’re just clothes (gasp!) and if you aren’t wearing them, get rid of them.

2. Find out what your closet’s missing.
Evidently, there is no science to dressing, but there are certain items that we can incorporate that will make outfits more complete, and make those difficult morning decisions much easier. We all have our own styles, so these closet essentials are all relative, but finding items within these categories that fit and flatter you, will definitely give you the boost you’re looking for in 2012.

Topshop blouse / American Eagle sweater / AllSaints leather jacketMango blazer / Hue leggings / Zara top / BCBG dress / Levi’s jeans / Gap skirt / Urban T-shirt / Old Navy cardi

  • A solid blouse is great with jeans or tucked into a skirt with a blazer.
  • A chunky knit is perfect for Winter or a breezy Spring day paired with shorts.
  • A leather jacket for Fall and Spring – or a trench if you’re more of a classic gal.
  • A fitted blazer for any dressed up occasion, a black one is preferable for versatility.
  • Leggings for comfy soirées or even a night out with heels and some sparkle.
  • Speaking of sparkle, an embellished top is great for dressing anything up.
  • A little black dress, obviously. Accessories change an LBD in a cinch.
  • Slimming jeans can be hard to find, but the perfect pair are so essential.
  • A flattering skirt is different for every body type, find the shape that best suits you.
  • A graphic T is great for throwing on with jeans but also gives your skirt some edge.
  • A cardigan is essential for every Canadian who needs to throw on some warmth.

Forever21 EarringsZara clutch / Mango bracelet / Nine West pumps / Forever21 necklace / Forever21 scarfForever21 ring / BCBG boots / Dolce Vita flats

  • Statement earrings are vital for adding some bling to an LBD or a casual outfit.
  • A clutch is necessary for any night out & ‘dutches’ (day clutches) are all the rage.
  • A cuff or bangles are so easy to throw on and mix up.
  • Nude pumps are critical, they match with everything and will become your go-to.
  • A statement necklace transforms any outfit – casual or classy – it always works.
  • A pattern scarf is perfect for a relaxed day or accessorizing a lacking outfit.
  • A statement ring spices up just about anything – try a combination of styles.
  • Warm boots are necessary for any Canadian, heeled or flat, find your poison.
  • Colourful flats are a great accent for a neutral outfit – red ones give the best pop.

3. Organize your closet
Take the time to fold and classify your things, this will be your best asset for those daily choices. Seeing what you own in an orderly fashion is crucial. Visit Ikea for budget-friendly solutions to your closet woes!

 4. Break the Rules
I’m always a big advocate for breaking the rules and taking risks. Once you’ve built up your closet essentials, be sure to incorporate that edge that makes your collection of clothing all yours. Every once in a while, remember to reach beyond your comfort zone and bring your closet to new heights…2012 can be your most fashionable year yet!

The Best of Boxing Day Sales (Going On Now…)

It’s that time of year, once again! We’ve spent our last few shopping trips perusing the racks for our loved ones, for once never thinking of what we need (or most importantly, want). Christmas Day has come and gone, and we’ve received plenty of gifts from distant family members, close relatives, friends and plenty of knickknacks from acquaintances. Enter the most genius of Holiday traditions: a Sale period that allows us to gift ourselves with the things we really wanted, at prices we only get to see biannually. Online and in-store, there are plenty of Sales to chose from, it all really depends on what you’re looking for. In an effort to organize your frantic Boxing Day (and beyond) shopping, I give you a review of some current sales and a little bit about what you’ll find…so that you don’t waste your ‘me-time’ on a Sale that’s not worth your energy …in a nutshell.

Looking for: Anything and Everything
Best Bet: Shopbop.com

With over 400 designers ranging from 3.1 Phillip Lim and Jil Sander to Splendid, Marc by Marc Jacobs and Free People, Shopbop’s wide range will have you browsing for hours. Aside from the endless goggling that will take place, you can also righteously spend your virtual time in their Sale section, which includes some great deals for you closet and/or jewelry box. For example, the following items are considerably marked down and each under $100. Browse away!

See items here: necklace, ring, skirt, top, boots

Looking for: Quality Workwear and Cozy Sweaters
Best Bet: Banana Republic

Two of my finds!

Contrary to popular belief, Banana Republic offers a great range of prices and the quality is always topnotch. If you’re really looking for a deal, head to the back where Sale racks are divided by size and overflowing with cardis, jeans, blazers and tops. For a limited time, all items are an additional 30% off, so feel free to roam the new collections too. A big majority of my costume jewelry comes from Banana, so be sure to peruse those unappealing plastic bags that are actually filled with little treasures, all on sale.
I visited Banana on Boxing Day and picked up 4 lovely items, two of which are pictured at right (and were an additional 30% off!) See the items here and here.
Shop the Banana Sale here or visit a store near you!

Looking for: (Literally) Piles and Piles of Clothing- different styles & seasons
Best Bet:  Zara

If you’re a Zara girl like me, you know what I mean by literal piles. Come Sale season, the (somewhat) orderly scene at Zara becomes complete and utter chaos. Every table in the store is filled with piles of turtlenecks, long sleeves, t-shirts, sweaters, jeans and the like, priced by a large sign found on each table. Be sure to double check the prices before you hand over your credit card, because it’s often the case that things end up where they don’t belong. However, if you’ve got the patience, the time and the will power, you’ll definitely find some great staples at this time of year, with prices that won’t come back ’til summer Sale season rolls around. These three items are cute and versatile, at under $40.

See items here: dress, jeans, sweater

Looking for: Quirky Accessories & Unique Party Dresses
Best Bet: Asos.com

Asos.com offers its own one-of-a-kind brand (which essentially dominates the website) as well as other reasonably priced lines such as Jeffrey Campbell, American Apparel, Cheap Monday and Sam Edelman. This is an online store that offers cute, eccentric, on-trend fashions that surely fit your budget (assuming you have one for impulse purchases). The shoes, dresses and accessories will have you mirroring style mavens like Zooey Deschanel, Alexa Chung and Kelly Framel. These three lust-worthy garments are all $50 and under…can you say “at to shopping bag?”

See items here: 1 2 3

Looking for: High-End Designer Duds
Best Bet: Net-a-porter.com

A sale at net-a-porter only comes around a few times a year and after that, their Sale section literally disappears, as though no prices had ever been reduced. So, if you’re looking to treat yourself to a designer item in 2012, now is truly the time. With items at up to 70% off, you’re sure to find a piece that you’ll cherish for years to come. Each of these lovely pieces (Pierre Hardy wedges…hiiii) are marked down by 70%, so you’re guaranteed to find a steal of your own.

Man’s Digest: Gift-Giving

"You got me WHATTT?"

Besides endless Sex and the City reruns, the time it takes us to get all dolled up and ‘that time of the month’, I’d say the biggest struggle a man faces in a relationship is picking the perfect cadeaux for any given celebration. There are, of course, some men who are genius at this art, and to them, I say kudos. To you other boys who dread the thought of jolly old Saint Nicholas or the day your girlfriend begins to countdown to her birthday, and even that mark on the calendar indicating your anniversary, this postaroo is for you.

Here are 7 Gift Ideas that will have any woman smiling no matter the occasion:

1. Concert Tickets
Even if your girlfriend isn’t music-obsessed like some of our nutshells, every woman has a favourite band or singer, and it’s worth a shot to check out tour dates and upcoming events. Plus, it’ll give you both something to look forward to in the future, and she’ll love the thought you put into it all. Plain and simple, this is a great gift.

2. A Day/Weekend Trip
In the end there’s nothing we want more than to spend time with you, and a romantic weekend away is the perfect excuse. A place like Le Nordik or Chateau Montebello are especially beautiful this time of year, and no material item will compare to those memories. If you don’t have the time or budget to allow for this kind of thing, even a hotel near home will give you that touch of extravagance and escape.

3. A Card & Dinner Plans
This is not your ordinary “Merry Christmas. Love you.” card. For this to give her just the right amount of butterflies, you’ve got to work for it. Put some thought into it, make a draft and think over the things you’d like to tell her. Most girls I know keep all of their greeting cards, and this one will be at the top of the pile. Include a little IOU to her favorite restaurant on a certain date, and then make sure you own up to it!

Cat's words get me every time.

4. Vintage Keepsakes
This one is dependent on your girlfriend’s hobbies and interests. If she loves fashion, dig around an antique store or eBay for vintage Vogue covers, they will make for great wall art, and she’ll remember the effort you put into finding them for years to come. If she loves music, find some antique records or an old record player; either of these will be a pleasant surprise, and she’ll have them forever. Other ideas are: a vintage sewing machine (for design/DIY lovers), an old polaroid or film camera or the first edition of her favorite novel.

5.  Perfume
If you’re afraid to buy the wrong one, make note of the bottles she already owns and bring the list to the department store. An employee will surely steer you in the right direction based on the notes she already loves, and she’ll think of you every time she spritzes it on. Read about each of our favorite perfumes here.

6. A piece of jewelry (certain conditions apply)
This can be tricky. And there are a few circumstances to consider: 1) She eyes something while you two are shopping and you return later to pick it up – this will have her grinning for hours. 2) You invite her best friend on a little shopping trip to help you pick something out. She’ll actually love that you got her bestie involved and that you care enough to make sure it is bff-approved. 3) You got it alone. You either blow her away with your eye for bling… or you fail. You’ll only know you failed until a few months later when she hasn’t worn it since the night it was unwrapped.

The bracelet: perfect!

*Some sparkle advice:
- Take notice of whether she’s a gold or silver kind of girl. Stick to what she loves.
- A chain-link bracelet (like this or this) or a charm with a simple chain (like this or this) are usually safe bets.
- Sometimes the smallest stores have the best finds, and you’ll be giving her something she’s never seen before. Try antique or artsy jewelry stores.

7. Photo Albums/Frames
If you’ve just returned from a memorable trip, or you’re celebrating a milestone in your relationship, a photo book from iPhoto, Shutterfly or Picaboo is an amazing keepsake. These books are fully customizable if you have an idea in mind, or you can select from any theme and simply drag and drop your favorite moments. Read more about photo books here.  An enlarged and framed photo is also a great gift if a photo book seems like too much.

STEER CLEAR of…

1. A ring
Boys, we dream of the cut, clarity and carat of that other life-changing ring, but we do not want to feel dread, excitement or shock when we’re handed a velvet box that contains a ring that is only meant to adorn our index finger. Just steer clear of that whole experience. It’s what’s best for you both.

2. Lingerie
Some girls may love this gift. But in my humble opinion, it seems like a bit of a selfish offering. If you’ve got a card and dinner to pair with your premeditated desert, then this will pass for Valentine’s Day.

3.  Household Equipment
This one’s for all those mom’s out there. I personally don’t have this problem yet but I know from first-hand experience that sons seems to think there mom’s are in need of these types of things. Yes, that broom is polka dotted and this soap smells very nice, but mom does not want to be reminded of her kitchen floors on Christmas morning. Lastly, any store with the words “Tire” or “Hardware” are not shopping hotspots for the women in your lives.

4. Excuses
“I have no money” or “I’m so busy these days, I didn’t have time” or “I left my gift at home”…all these things can very well be true, but they’re also inexcusable. There are plenty of great gift ideas that do not involve money, time, effort or a calendar. If you remember an event the day of, make it a point to come up with something (planning a weekend away takes just a few minutes online and you can decide on the date together). If you are short on money, try to make her something…developing a picture costs about 5 cents and an IOU for dinner can be contingent on your next paycheck. If you’re a busy guy, watch one less hockey game and I’m sure you’ll miraculously have some time on your hands.

In the end, us girls are all different and I’m sure you know your lady much better than I do, (unless you happen to be dating a nut!) but usually the simplest thought is the greatest gift of all and is unlike any large expense or extravagant purchase. Simply put, if you tailor any of the items on this list to your girl, I’d say you’ll pass with flying colors. Happy Shopping!

We also love sparklers...just sayin'.

What We’re Craving RIGHT Now…

Lately, we’ve been talking a LOT about falling into a new season… (See what I did there?) Don’t get me wrong, we nuts will definitely miss summer. The hot summer days, long summer nights and all the fun that goes hand in hand with NOT being bundled up is always the best. But, we have to come to terms with the fact that summer is fleeting, and fall is upon us. Personally, I love fall. Not only am I able to rock jeans and a cardigan (my un-fashionable go-to uniform), but I’m also able to justify “back-to-school” shopping. (Even if you aren’t in school, September somehow makes you believe that you need an entirely new wardrobe.) Kaylee hits it on the mark with her pick for a fall fashion must-have here, and so I asked the other nuts what they were craving to complete their closets this season….

Catherine:

#1 – Aritzia leopard scarf

I’ve been eyeing this scarf for a year now. One of my favourite ways to dress up a fall outfit is to throw on a scarf that is both cozy and fashionable and can be worn in and out of doors. I love the animal print on this one and think it’s equal parts exotic and understated. The problem: the scarf is $68 !! I haven’t been able to justify spending that much on a single accessory that should really cost $30 at most … but I drool every time I’m online browsing or perusing my favourite store.

#2 – Charles Albert loafer pumps

I have fallen in love with these shoes. I’ve developed a recent obsession with neutral colour footwear and these plat-formed heels are both retro and modern. I could wear these with any work outfit but could also pair it with a flirty skirt for a night on the town. Only $49 I think I know what my next purchase is going to be … (if the scarf doesn’t bankrupt me first!)

Jess:

#1 – Feminine-looking loafers:

With male twists on many of the fall 2011 runway collections – I can’t get my mind off finding a pair of perfectly feminine loafers. I have my eye on either the Tommy Hilfiger Penny Loafer Heels (in dark brown or bottle green) or a variation of Top Shop’s May Snaffle Trim Loafers (in tan) to pull off an instantly classic look when paired with either work clothes, or a pair of dark skinny jeans.

#2 – Michael Kors Hooded Snap Coats:

This fall I want something that’s versatile enough to wear either at work or in my downtime – and this coat does the trick with its conservative military snaps and equally playful billowy hood. I also love high collars – they’re an easy way to achieve that stylish runway look, while still keeping the collarbone cozy during those chilly Ottawa autumns.

Kate:

#1 – The Regent Grovesnor Hunter Boot

With all of the things I love about fall, there is one thing that I simply cannot stand: getting my tootsies wet. A pleasant walk anywhere is enormously depreciated by this one small factor of sopping extremities. So this fall, I am craving a sparkly version of a common boot – The Hunter Boot. The pair I have my eye on are studded with silver buttons and will certainly add that extra bit of jazz to my fall wardrobe.

 Meghan:

#1 – Michael Kors Hamilton Messenger Bag:

Right now I am DYING for a new bag. I have a slight obsession with purses, but lately my choices have been on the small size. Now that I’m back in school I need a larger bag that not only fits my binder and the papers I have to mark, but a million other items that I need to have at my disposal. My ultimate pick is this medium sized Micahel Kors bag, whose colour is so rich, fitting right in with the rich colours that this season has to offer.

#2 – American Eagle ‘Favourite’ Plaid Shirt:

On a slightly more affordable note, I would also love a new plaid shirt. Red is such a rich fall colour, and I’m dying for a cozy shirt to wear to class. While I can probably find something from the plaid variety in a vintage shop, American Eagle has a slightly more tailored version that I have my eye on.

With so many fall favourites on our hands, I have a feeling our wallets are going to feel a little bit lighter, in a nutshell…

Backpacker’s Diary: Part 2

I am currently typing to you from the train that kicks off our trip, which will be taking us to Toronto to catch our flight to Athens. I have to say that despite the endless packing, shopping and planning, this trip still feels surreal. I can’t seem to wrap my head around a three month adventure. Despite this, I am obviously feeling curious, excited, nervous and so many other things when I think about what we’re about to do.

When I wrote Part 1 of this series, I had only gone so far as to purchase the real essentials, from backpacks to a tent and some water canisters. Following that, I felt relieved and basically all set for three months of camping, hiking, exploring and sightseeing. When I began compiling my packing list however, I quickly realized that the shopping was far from over.

My very long list included walking shoes, a day bag, things to keep me warm, pint-sized toiletries, a camera and everything in between. Nothing I owned seemed compact enough for a trip like this. When the shopping began, I was most mindful of versatility, comfort and as I’m sure you can guess, style was a factor as well.

Savvy Summer Spending

Reading this blog, you can get a feel for how we nuts like to live life to the fullest, whether it be by engaging in various activities listed on our summer bucket list, attending outdoor music festivals, or searching for great spots to dine and drink. The one downside to an amazing summer filled with exciting experiences, is the havoc it wreaks on your bank account. So here are some tips I’ve pulled together on how to save some moula and make sure your summer doesn’t suffer…

1)      The WANT vs. NEED test:

As you can probably tell, we nuts love to shop. Whether it be jewlery, shoes, purses or clothing, you will be hard pressed to find a woman who isn’t enticed by the closest mall. That being said, it is very easy to blow half (or all) of your paycheque in a single visit. Something that I have learned is to evaluate what I actually NEED and what I want because it’s beautiful. If you rip your favourite jeans that you wear twice a week, then by all means, replace them! That’s a crucial purchase. But, if you have 5 pairs of jeans that look the same and you find a 6th (similar) pair, you probably don’t NEED them.

Try to be good little nuts, even though I know it's hard!

However, it is important to splurge. If there is an item that you WANT but don’t NEED, walk away for that day. Don’t be swayed into an impulse buy. If you’re still thinking about that WANT after a few days, then cut back on something else (like eating out which is a HUGE money sucker) for a week or two and use the money you’ve saved to go out and get it. There is nothing worse than depriving yourself and regretting it later.

2)      Take the time to look for Specials:

The latest craze that has hit the mainstream is couponing. After watching Extreme Couponing on TLC I literally had to re-evaluate how much money I spend on groceries. Unfortunately, the shoppers depicted on the show are from the United States, and we Canadians are not privy to the vast number of coupons that they are. However, the weekly fliers for grocers in your neighbourhood can become your best friend. Just by planning out your shopping trip, you can easily save yourself a good chunk of change each week.

Your new best friend...

Similarly, when dining out during the week, you can find great specials. For example, Milestones has a ‘Girls Night Out’ special every Monday. Four of their delicious belinis and four appetizers for $40; you can’t beat it!

-image via www.milestones.com

Finally, take advantage of couponing sites like Living Social and Groupon. These daily-deal sites send you one e-mail a day that offer seriously discounted services and products. Sometimes they aren’t applicable, like the day I was offered a discounted oil-change for my non-existent car, but they often offer great deals on aesthetics and exercise, such as yoga and Pilates classes.

3)      Make a budget, and stick to it:

Sit down each month and try to make a budget that accurately reflects your expenses and how much you are putting away into savings, but make sure to take your social life into account. Each month is different, and your budget should reflect that. Where July has been filled with lots of (pricey) events, October might not be. So maybe I can’t buy a new purse this month, but come October, that baby will be all mine!

Finally, leave the debit card at home! One of the biggest problems that we have is the ‘never-ending’ cash flow that is always at our fingertips. When you can’t see the money leaving your hand, you tend to overspend. Bring cash with you when you go out and when you shop so that you can track your spending and stick to your allotted amount.

Watch the money pile up nuts!

Made in Canada

It’s that time of year! July 1st long weekend, when we celebrate everything our exceptional country has to offer; there are countless fireworks, bottomless kegs, royal visits, red and white flags, and general fun-having from East to Western Canada. In celebration of this fine day, I thought it would be nice to pay hommage to the designers and brands that offer tasteful styles and make Canadians proud with every stitch and every catwalk. There are plenty of designers from Canada, so I can’t name them all, but here’s just a nutshell-sized taste!

Luxury

1. Erdem

Kate Middleton headed to Canada wearing Erdem

Worn by Kate Middleton herself this week as she boarded for her Canadian visit, Erdem is one of Canadian fashion’s biggest claims to fame. Erdem Moralioglu was raised in Montreal, studied fashion abroad and at home, and later worked at the Diane Von Furstenberg offices. In 2005, Erdem launched his own brand with the intention of reinforcing femininity. Today, Erdem is worn by fashion’s most stylish followers, from Sarah Jessica Parker and Sienna Miller to Chloe Sevigny. Erdem signatures include graphic florals, fitted and structured silhouettes and feminine styles that flatter every woman season after season.

2. Dsquared2

Madonna made Dsquared2 famous when she wore their jeans in her “Don’t Tell Me” video in 2000. Designed by twins Dean and Dan Caten from Toronto, Dsquared2 has been on the forefront of high-fashion for several years now. While the brand is home to Milan today, the designers never forget their heritage, often including Canadian maple leafs on their signature sneakers and hats.

3. Denis Gagnon

Denis Gagnon is a true Montrealer. Seen at the odd fashion event and collaborating with various other Montreal-based designers (such as Bedo and Aldo), Denis Gagnon has always stayed true to the city he calls home.

Known for his oversized black frames, Gagnon is constantly evolving, using texture and layering as his singular constant. After a very successful exhibit at the Montreal Museum of Fine Art in 2010, Gagnon has become a household name among Canadian fashion enthusiasts.

He just recently opened an Old Montreal location that I had the pleasure of visiting a few weeks ago. While the store itself is small in space, the opportunity to touch his detailed pieces was memorable.

4. Pink Tartan

Kimberley Newport-Mimran, head designer of Pink Tartan, was raised in Niagara Falls, and later moved to Toronto to pursue a career in fashion. She then married Joe Mimram, the CEO of Club Monaco where she spent a few years working in product development. Joe then sold Club Monaco to Ralph Lauren and created the Canadian brand Joe Fresh. In 2002, Kimberley founded a brand that would put her on the international fashion radar, Pink Tartan.

Today, Pink Tartan is synonymous with preppy, posh and ladylike looks. Worn by Kate Hudson and Maggie Gyllenhaal, Kimberley has successfully created a brand that embodies the saying “sexy is what you don’t see”. Never tired and always fresh, Pink Tartan will forever be a label that Canada takes pride in.

Streetwear

1. Smythe

Blake Lively in a Smythe Camel Coat

While Smythe designs clothing of all kinds, this brand is best known for its tailored blazers and coats. Designed by Toronto powerhouses Andrea Lenczner and Christie Smythe, the label is meant to be for a woman’s real lifestyle. In other words, jackets are meant to be worn from work to play, allowing the 9 to 5 woman, the freedom of looking put together day and night. Andrea explains, “We’re both working mothers, so we have our social lives, our work lives, we love to travel, and we have our home lives with our kids. We try to design a jacket or coat for all those different scenarios and moods — every collection feels like someone’s closet.” Today, Smythe designs are worn by the likes of Blake Lively and Anne Hathway.

2. Erin Kleinberg

While Erin Kleinberg is still quite a young brand (founded in 2008), the label is already making international headlines. Kleinberg designs carefree, semi-couture basics which have been worn by Kim Kardashian, Taylor Momsen and Karlie Kloss.

3. Flora & Fauna

Flora & Fauna is Canadian eco-fashion’s claim to fame. Founded in 2008 by Pauline Siu, the brand creates collections for the modern woman who cares for the environment. Inspired by the wildlife of out west, Flora & Fauna produces clothing sustainably and ethically in Canada.

4. Complex Geometries

Complex Geometries and its Montreal-based designer have acquired quite the international following. Founded in 2005 by Alberta-native Clayton Evans, this avant-garde label uses asymmetry and minimalism to design pieces that are incredibly different.

5. Mackage

Mackage is one of Canada’s best known designers. Based in Montreal (just a block away from my office!), this label brings outerwear to a whole new level. Designing everything from peacoats to puffers and leather jackets, Mackage is a real Canadian staple.

At a Mall Near You

1. Bedo

Bedo is a Montreal-based brand that looks to the runways for inspiration. Each season, the brand creates looks for both a night on the town and a day at the office, and the stores receive new collections every two weeks, keeping customers coming back for more. It’s affordable, fun and a safe bet if you’re shopping for an outfit to wear within the hour.

2. Kensie

Kensie Belted Shirt Dress

Kensie is one of my favorite brands in general, never mind that they are a proud Canadian brand as well. Designed for younger generations, Kensie is flirty but still edgy and always looking to play with the idea of a change in a young girl’s life. You’ll find cute dresses and lovely tops by Kensie at The Bay.

3. Roots

I have a special place in my heart for Roots, as in 1973; the company was established with its main inspiration being Algonquin Park, a place where I spent every summer of my childhood. Originally based in Toronto, the brand is now a cornerstone of Canadian fashion with more than 120 locations in North America. Roots is best known for its leather pieces and athletic wear (who could forget those sweatpants?) but perhaps the greatest thing about Roots is its Canadian pride. While some brands intend to enter the international market with let’s say, a smaller tie to Canada, Roots has over the years, embodied and embraced all things Canadian.

4. Aldo

Jessica Stam models for ALDO

Perhaps Canada’s best known brand, Aldo is a hugely successful company that has seen international acknowledgment for many years. With 900 stores in 45 countries, Aldo has become a cornerstone of affordable and fashionable footwear and accessories around the world. Expanding with other successes such as Little Burgundy, LOCALE (my new favorite!) and other footwear stores, Montreal-based ALDO Group is sure to be around for years to come.

5. Rudsak

Rudsak is best known for its leather pieces, from handbags to jackets, designer Evik Asatoorian has perfected the use of this signature material. In 1994, Asatoorian launched Rudsak in Montreal with the intention of creating collections that would reflect the urban life with an edge. With eight stores in Quebec and two in Toronto, Rudsak is climbing the Canadian market and continually looking to reinvent the use of leather with sleek, minimalistic designs.

It’s important to support our fellow Canadians, check out this full list of Canadian designers and Happy Canada Day weekend

All Kinds of Bling

You know those moments when you’re browsing through a store and one item jumps out at you and immediately makes you think of your best friend? Well, this happens to me on a daily basis; not only while shopping, but while searching for the latest sales online (for these) and even while flipping through magazines. I’ve uttered the words “This is so Jess” or “Kate would wear something like this” too many times to count. While our individual styles are definitely comparable (where else are we supposed to borrow clothes?), we do all have those little things that set us apart. I’d say this is most evident in our accessories. Jess has already written about our ring choices, and here I will show you a few pieces that I  think you’d find in the girls’ jewelry boxes, mixed with items that make me think of each of them. Whether you’re super girly and can’t get enough of floral embellishments, or you’ve worn the same three pieces for as long as you can remember, I’m sure you’ll find at least one girl you can relate to here, and one piece you need to have.

Kate
If you love bold pieces that are often nature-inspired, you’ll adore the contents of Kate’s jewelry box. Statement necklaces, floral studs and vintage-inspired rings are typical Kate, and so lovely worn with a sundress or even a crop top and jean shorts; versatility and trendiness at its best.

Summer Festival Style

While a large group of our friends spent this past weekend at Bonaroo, us nuts are waiting in anticipation for Canada’s summer festivals and the fashion that will ensue as a result! I know that Jess will give you the full run through of Ottawa Bluesfest when the time comes, and I will definitely post highlights from Montreal Jazz Fest, but this topic deserves attention right about now. Apart from the music and the drinking in the streets, music festivals bring a whole new angle to day dressing. The shortest of jean shorts, flowing maxi dresses, feathered headbands and more satchel bags than any one place has ever seen- it’s a cornucopia of Woodstock-inspired style.

Festival dressing is all about pushing boundaries; throwing on your most outlandish pieces because you know there’s no other place they can be worn. I can’t think of another setting where I would stick a feather in my hair and rock a head-to-toe look straight out of the 70′s. While I may opt to channel this era, there are plenty of trends that have emerged both in the summer season, and as a direct result of these festivals, here’s a quick look at those:

Feminine festival-goers will opt for a little white dress and cut-off booties topped off with dainty accessories. This look is perfect for a hot, sunny day when only white linen seems acceptable. Free-flowing locks are a must, and on that note, how do we feel about Whitney Port’s Princess Leia-esque buns? (far right). Like I mentioned, this is the place to experiment with things you wouldn’t normally wear out in the real world- it’s all about channeling your inner groupie.

Evidently, the staple during festival season is the ripped, shorter than short, pocket-peeking, jean short. These are truly the easy solution to day dressing on a breezy day. They’re comfortable, cute and let the sun shine down on those stems of yours. Layer on some tribal neck-wear or an adorable brimmed hat like Elin Kling (far right) and you’ll be ready for swaying to those alternative tunes.

The Maxi. After several summers of only celebs and those few daring girls sporting it, the maxi skirt has officially become a summer staple in my opinion. This look screams festival; it’s flowy, care-free and requires little to no thought. Gladiator sandals, a light crop top paired with your maxi, aviators, and you’re all set- looking glamorous and festive in mere moments.

Finally, here is my Shopping List for the city-dweller heading out for a music fest in the coming months. While I highly suggest rummaging through your closet for some dusty pieces that can be reworked for this one occasion, there’s always room for a little shopping. This outfit is low-key, tribal-inspired and comfy. After all, most festivals involve a great deal of standing and walking, so a romper and a flat sandal seem ideal. Obviously these festivals are all about the exceptional musical lineups, but if you’ve got a camera out anyway, you may as well look your festival-best…in a nutshell.

Put A Ring On It

It’s amazing how tireless women can be when going after something they want. This statement is applicable in personal situations, the working world, and in this specific case (as most of us nuts know) – this is unbelievably true when it comes to having an item or possession that you can’t get out of your mind. Whether it’s that little black dress (that you feel should be easy to find), that specific pair of shoes you’ve created in your brain, or that piece of jewelry of which you’ve seen variations on other people – you can close out the shopping mall on a desperate hunt for what you’ve convinced yourself exists. This might sound a little silly; I mean, it’s just a possession, it’s just a decoration. But I think this goes further back than that. As we grow older and start migrating away from the weekly purchases of $8 accessories that sparkle for about an hour, I feel like we think back to when we were little girls, envious of our Mother’s sparkling jewels. Most of the time we were most in awe of the pieces that dazzled even after 20 plus years of wear. We might even start to think that it’s time that we put some cash or thought into a few decent staples that fit us like a glove, and that we’ll have forever.

I began this kind of thought process and search about a year ago, when I became determined to find the perfect ring. Something reasonable, pretty, and something that in five years I’m going to have to pry off my hand. Why was I so adamant on finding this? For one, I work in Communications, meaning I’m always meeting with someone and talking to somebody – and therefore am also usually flailing my hands around to add emphasis to what I’m saying. The paws have to look semi-decent in the workplace. Another reason, and a more basic one at that – is that the rings I notice on my friends are the ones that they hardly switch up, regardless of the outfit. I don’t ever get a chance to notice the practically disposable ones which are tossed into the depths of a jewelry bowl, never to be seen again after one wear. And so began the avid search. I looked at:

Flea markets and vintage sales:

Pro – There are SO many funky things at these sales, and you can trust that whatever you pick up has a fantastic story behind it. You’ll find many unique pieces, gemstones and concepts that are most likely one in a million.
Con – Sometimes it’s hard to know exactly the materials in the ring, and therefore whether or not it will turn colour, last without breaking, or wear away. Unless an educated jeweler is selling the ring, even they might not know exactly what you’re working with.

Accessible Upscale Chain Stores (eg: Banana Republic, Coach, BCBG):

Pro
–  These stores are unbelievably on target with current fashion trends, while still staying timeless and classic. This means you’re very likely to find a piece of jewelry that appeals to you, is sparkly, unique and sturdy in make.
Con –  You’d be surprised how few of their pieces (despite clocking in at anywhere from $35 to $150) are actually made with sterling silver or gold plate. Although beautiful in appearance, even some of the most expensive pieces admittedly are made with nickel or gold tone – and might turn the band that icky green after a few wears. If you’re OK with that – go for it, because the pieces are still extremely fashionable!

Online Jewelry Retailers:

Pro – As we all know, the internet is our oyster – type in what you want and you will find someone who’s selling it. So, if you search “gold-plated Turquoise ring”, you’ll be pulled towards amazingly resourceful retailers like Beso or ShopStyle.com who will have a number of options and designers for you to browse through.
Con – I don’t know about you, but like shoes, rings are something I would like to try on before I hand over my credit card number. I never know how the tone of the ring will look in the light of day on my finger, compared to how it looked on a computer screen. So, if you’re anything like me, you might want to try that $100 puppy on first.

In conclusion, the hunt is over. Where did I find my precious baby ring? Well, I found it with the power of traipsing around…wait for it…on foot. I jaunted all over the city in the heat, the snow, and the rain – for what’s felt like a lifetime, and I found it a lovely Ottawa store called True Bijoux, which is less than four blocks from my work (secretly sighing about that). During the ring search, I started exploring jewelry companies that might seem like they only market one thing (necklace, bracelet, etc.), but actually have all sorts of different lines. I looked at the Pandora bracelets ages ago, and then figured I would browse through their rings – and that’s where I found what clicked. It fits like a glove, sparkles with little diamonds, and didn’t break the bank. The line is also sold at Magpie, which has three Ottawa locations. Moral of the story, after stopping buying $10 pieces of jewelry every four minutes, you’d be surprised what you can save up for – and what you’ll inevitably enjoy for years to come.

So, check out the ring bling each of us nuts sport! In a nutshell, these things really are a girl’s best friend.
