L’Orignal

Aside from architecture, nightlife and shopping, Montreal is best known for its diverse and exquisite cuisine. Like most Montrealers, I have a long list of favorite restaurants in the city, from Bring Your Own Wines on St-Denis to small French bistros on Bernard. Of all areas however, the Old Port boasts Montreal’s true gems. Exuding historical significance and sophistication, the cobblestone streets of Old Montreal are often compared to those of European cities. Hidden on the small street of Saint-Alexis, right off of the heart of the Old Port, Notre-Dame, is Restaurant L’Orignal (translation = moose). L’Orignal is a rustic and quaint restaurant that is unpretentious and truly inviting. While the environment mirrors that of a high-end ski lodge, the bar is always happening and the music is that perfect dinner-dancing-in-your-seat kind. Once you’ve nestled into your spot, you’ll be greeted by staff who will remember your last meal and who make you feel right at home. The sommelier (wine specialist) will guide you through your choices, but the cocktails (like the Black Cherry Cosmopolitans below) are also not to be missed.

If you’re an Oyster lover, this is the place for you. From Nova Scotia to Maine, the Oysters at L’Orginal are fresh and always flavorful, and often my favorite part of the meal.

The Chef's Selection of Oysters

If you’re not much of an Oyster fan, L’Orignal will not disappoint. Ordering anything off the menu will leave you feeling satisfied and delighted by the culinary experience. My mom and I shared two dishes, the pan seared giant scallops in a rice and bacon crust served with garlic potatoes and a veal dish off the specials menu. The scallops (which are on the “Classics” menu) were our favorite, absolutely mouth-watering.

While L’Orignal isn’t exactly for the budget-conscious, ordering a cocktail and a main dish is definitely affordable and equally delightful. Whether you’re a resident or planning a visit, you’ll get a true taste of Montreal cuisine and ambience at L’Orignal. Restaurant Co-Owner, Travis, has really captured the essence of comfortable and gourmet with a twist of current.
